Environmental Justice:

Assembly District 31 residents have long experienced the terrible impacts of environmental racism, and Black and brown communities in Assembly District 31 and all of New York State experience disproportionate amounts of environmental pollution. In the Assembly, I am dedicated to advocating for environmental justice alongside my colleagues in government and environmental advocates and activists. We are fighting for a Green New Deal for Southeast Queens, a restoration and rebuilding of NYCHA focused on sustainability, and protections to address the pressing issue of climate change. I’ve introduced legislation calling for a green air travel tax on passengers flying over communities like ours, which experience disproportionate air noise pollution because of their proximity to airports. Though we’ve accomplished a tremendous amount, there is still so much work ahead.

  • We also need:

    • Air-quality testing and improvement near JFK Airport

    • Mold-free public housing

    • Clean, drinkable water in our homes and schools

    • Lead paint-free schools

    • Parks, playgrounds and beaches that are well-maintained and accessible, and an end to dumping in Jamaica Bay

    • More community gardens and food cooperatives that provide healthy foods
